After thoughtful deliberation, the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest has made the difficult decision to cancel our remaining Asthma Camp programs for 2009. The determination to cancel camps was made after reports of both confirmed and suspected cases of H1N1 from multiple summer camps around the country. Because of the unique population of our campers and the fact that they already suffer from compromised lung function, we believe this action is in their best interest. The mission of the American Lung Association is to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. Camp WIKIDAS is a weeklong summer camp for children ages 8 through 13 with moderate to severe asthma. Camp takes place at Camp Wawbeek, a 400-acre site one mile northeast of the Wisconsin Dells in Columbia County. Children must be on daily asthma medication to attend.
Boys and girls participate in swimming, rope and rock climbing, canoeing, hiking and other fun and challenging activities. Campers also attend instructional sessions where they learn how to manage their asthma in daily life. They forge relationships with children like themselves, realizing that other kids struggle with asthma too.
Camp WIKIDAS medical staff includes at least two or three physician allergists and numerous registered and practical nurses, respiratory therapists and pharmacists. These dedicated health care professionals supervise the daily administration of medications and provide 24-hour medical care for the campers.
To register your child for Camp WIKIDAS, please download the registration form below. A $150 deposit is required at time of registration and the $155 balance ($305 total) is due upon your child's arrival at camp. Enrollment is limited to 90 participants.
