Latest Information on Lung Association Research Initiatives
The American Lung Association/COPD Foundation Partnership Research
Award in Bronchiectasis represents a funding partnership between the
COPD Foundation and the American Lung Association. The award, created
in 2006, provides funding for investigators focused on the treatment
or cure of bronchiectasis. The award will be for a maximum of $100,000
per year for a two year period.
The American Lung Association/COPD Foundation Partnership Research
Award in Bronchiectasis supports translational research on bronchiectasis.
Specifically, the program focuses on translating the most promising research
findings into approved therapies. Studies on how to halt or reverse the
disease progression will be given highest priority, and early detection and
prevention grants will also be considered.
The bronchiectasis research opportunities that should be explored include:
i) the need to identify clinical and pathological phenotypes of bronchiectasis
within various types of lung disease, including bronchiectasis isolated from
other forms of lung disease,including factors of genetic disposition;
ii) increased understanding of repair processes in airway structural components;
iii) possible role of immune system deficiencies in development of bronchiectasis
and characterization of the inflammatory process; iv) role of environmental
mycobacteria in the pathogenesis of bronchiectasis; v) understanding the clearance of mucus and
ciliary activity in bronchial injury and repair; and vi) bacterial flora.
Applicants must be independent, self-directed researchers for whom their
institution must provide space and other resources customary for independent investigators.
The application must convey the commitment of the institution to the applicant and the
proposed research activities.
